DIRECTOR'S NOTES

When I volunteered* to direct Anything Goes, I had no idea what to expect.  You see, all of my past directing experience is derived from my four years as a teacher; consequently, I had never directed adults. It was time to take that plunge. With eager eyes I boarded the ship called the S.S. VACT in hopes of keeping it afloat.
Like a sponge lapping up the waves as they brushed the ship, I absorbed the wealth of knowledge that oozed from every member of the cast and crew. I learned many interesting facts about lighting, scene design, music, and choreography, but what I cherish the most are the tidbits of information I learned about the people along the way. We've shared dinners, favorite drinks, ship romances, and good and bad jokes, even some I could share with my mother. All this knowledge led me to the profound conclusion that directing adults is different! It is different because the kids have grown significantly bigger and, in some cases, much, much older. It doesn't matter what age we are, what matters is that we are all kids at heart and community theatre is the perfect opportunity to let the kid in you shine.
Anything Goes has been performed by professionals, community theaters and high schools all around the globe. It is as if the ship actually sails and finds a new port with each production. It is a show for young and old alike. The music is timeless and the characters loveable. The scenery and performers change with each production, but one item remains constant: People bond on this ship and there is always a new group anxious to take the journey.
I'm glad my first trip on the S.S. American was taken as a member of VACT. I couldn't have asked for a better staff, cast, or crew. They've all worked very hard to make this a smooth and memorable cruise for everyone. Happy sailing and bon voyage!!
